What others thought of the museum

“Amazing museum full of stories, artefacts, local and WWII history. It's a must see when visiting Horn Island and be sure to go on the tour as well to see WWII history. If you've got interest in war history then include it in your plans.”

This museum was so interesting. Lots of visuals and input from the people who served on Horn and Thursday Islands. It was delightful to read about Mr Squiggle entertaining the troops. A comprehensive and thoughtful display.

The whole museum concept is amazing when you realise that it was the brainchild of one woman, her husband and various volunteers. The exhibition is separated into discrete areas, with a focus on the native history, the pearling industry, the significance of Horn Island in WWII and the indigenous involvement in the recent history.”

“A very interesting tour about the role Horn Island played in protecting Australia during WWII. Vanessa is passionate and extremely knowledgeable. The museum she and her partner have established is well worth seeing.”
~ JANE P

“Fascinating museum, important to see if you are visiting the Torres Strait. It is a credit to Vanessa and her OAM reflects her massive commitment and dedication to the veteran community and history of the islands and WWII.”
~ NAT W

It is an amazing collection of cultural objects and historical photos, all clearly labelled and documented in detail. Next to a life-size figure of King Kebisu is the story of how his acceptance of "the coming of the Light" transformed his society from head hunters and revenge killers to a place of peace and harmony. The In Their Steps World War II Tour by Vanessa or her husband , Liberty is an eye opener to a part of Australia's history we had never heard before. Highly recommended.”
