1. Where is Horn Island?

Horn Island is located 55km north west of the Tip of Cape York, Queensland, 5km from Thursday Island in Torres Strait.  Torres Strait is the body of pristine water and approx 300 islands that separate the mainland of Australia with Papua New Guinea.  15 islands are inhabited.

2. How can we get there ?

There are several ways to get to Horn Island :

Qantaslink fly return to Cairns twice a day.

Seaswift operate a passenger barge service that visits the island every Sunday and is extremely popular.

Ferry : Driving north through Cape York is a fantastic way to see the area, and once at your camp ground near the Tip of Cape York, catch the Peddells Ferry from Seisia to Thursday and Horn Islands.

There are many packages available through 4WD, Coach and Tagalong tour agencies that combine different methods of arrival and departure travel to the area.

  1. 3. We are staying at a Campground, how do we get to Horn Island ?

See your friendly camp ground host and they will book your travel on the ferry and the Thursday Island and Horn Island tours.  They can also help arrange overnight visits.  You can also call Torres Strait Heritage on 40 90 3333 and we will assist you with your bookings.

  1. 5. Can we visit Horn and Thursday Island in one day ?

Yes, however it is a day full of experiences, so there is no time for shopping when the ‘Two in a Day’ package is enjoyed.   After the Thursday Island tour, guests catch the McDonalds Ferry to Horn Island where a Buffet Lunch is enjoyed before visiting the Torres Strait Heritage Museum and embarking on the tour of Horn Island.  Guests then catch the ferry straight back to the mainland via Thursday Island.

  1. 6. What is there to do in the area ?

There are a myriad of activities to enjoy while in the area, especially if you are staying a night or two.  Some experiences include fishing, boating, historical tours, helicopter / aircraft sightseeing, 4WD tour of Cape York (Day Trip), Culture Pearl Farm visit, BBQ on a beach and many more.  See our links page for information, or give Torres Strait Heritage a call.

  1. 7. Can we get to the Outer Islands ?

Yes, though please contact Torres Strait Heritage or the Torres Strait Island Regional Council  to make arrangements before travelling to the outer islands.  There are some lovely Guesthouses in the Outer Islands, and the flights depart everyday from Horn Island.

Thursday Island has all the conveniences of a town, including:

-       Grocery Store similar to Coles or Woolworths and more shopping
