Horn Island

Vanessa See Kee

Come and enjoy the ‘In Their Steps’ tour of Horn Island, with small groups of no more than 21 people, providing an unmatched personal interaction with your guide.  Your guides are Liberty and Vanessa, locals and experts in their fields of Torres Strait history, who provide an entertaining and enlightening commentary.  This commentary is a mixture of both archival information, and personal stories told to Vanessa and Liberty.

Visit gun emplacements, an underground command post, slit trenches, a WW2 aircraft wreck with an unbelievable story, WW2 airstrip, dispersal bays and taxiways.  Walk in the steps of the indigenous and non indigenous soldiers who served in the area, and listen to the eerie sound affects the airstrip today provides.

The tour is conducted in an air conditioned bus, with large viewing windows and travels on actual WW2 roads and tracks laid down by the military.

Included is a souvenir historical booklet and entry to the Torres Strait Heritage Museum on Horn Island.  Also available is the rare chance to receive some complimentary historical information about your own family’s military service and advice on other aspects of family research from Vanessa.  Be put in touch with your own family’s story.

Thursday Island

Thursday Island

Exploring Thursday Island, or ‘TI’ as it is known, gives visitors the chance to explore both the indigenous and non indigenous history of the island.  Learn of the pearling industry, upon which Thursday Island prospered, and the early years of European settlement on TI.  Discover how World War Two changed the face of TI, and the regrowth of the island’s population following their return after World War Two.

Visit historical and scenic locations that have interwoven themselves into the fabric of the community.  Green Hill fort offers spectacular views above ground, while the museum located in the old powered and cordite rooms and tunnels beneath the hill is an adventure.  The historical Thursday Island cemetery is a history book nestled against the hill, while original township buildings are waiting to be explored.  Thursday Island has evolved into a dynamic multicultural community, the perfect place to enjoy our tropical lifestyle.
